The Elesmere Guardian. WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 1891 UNSPORTSMANLIKE SPORT.
Wodld-be sportsmen have only themselves to thank for an advertisement which appears m another column of this issue. It was with regret that the gentlemen whose names are appended to that notice took the step they did, but they had no alternative. To hunt* ing men they have not the least objection ; few farmers hive. Bat they do object, most strongly, to the amount of damage done to their fences and crops by the irresponsible crowd of mounted individuals—- we cannot call them horse men— who h alp to swell the fieli. A meet of the hounds seems sufficient excuse for every man m the district who owns anything that by any stretch of the imagination can bo called a horse, to gallop through fonces, over newly snwn crops, among sheep, or anywhere his fancy leads him. Jumping is out of the question. If his horse could jump, this stamp of man would never let him. Hence he usually makes for the gates, which he opens, and of course neglects to close. Sheep get boxed, but this is of no consequence to him. The owner remonstrates, and is met with a derisive grin. Small wonder then that even the sport loving farmer turns at last, and is compelled to forbid all hunting over his land. As long as only men who meant business, mounted on horses that knew j their business, followed the hounds, they were gladly welcomed. The tailors he would not stand.
