The Ellesmere Guardian. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1891 A POLITICIAN'S ADDRESS.
The oracle has spoken. Like most oracles, its utterances are a trifle ambiguous. We do not think that even the most rabid supporter of Mr Saunders can extract much to praise from the utterances of that gentleman at Hororata. Perhaps the unfortunate member is not so much to blame after all. Thanks to tb» party to which he belongs, or to which he does not belong — it is pretty hard to classify Mr Saunders — at any rate, thanks to the Liberal party, the last session was not fruitful m anything very much except Honourable Members' honoraria. Consequently, be had little to tell his constituents except that he had received his honorarium, and to endeavour to persuade them that he ha*} named it. The former proposition did not require much demonstraiion. The latter, like every body elsa who ha* tried it, he failed altogether m proving, Still, a poor excuse ia bettor tban none, and tho )«m<? pxplaflafcion, combined with s vim lent attack on Mn ilmfflwx for ks'ms wfogmpi Ikm uftfc * jws &
decency, served to fill up the time which should have been /evoted to explaining his views to his constituents. This latter is a duty tke Honorable gentleman does not like. Perobing on the fence is a simple enough proceeding m the House. When an oscillating member attempts, however, to explain the why and wherefore of his oscillation to the people who sent him to Wellington, the case is different. Still, Mr Saundbrs displayed great skill m avoiding any reference to burning topics of the "day. Even m reply to questions he failed to commit himself to any extent, and his hearers are probably about; as well informed as to bis. real views and intentionß as they were before hearing the ! address* We presume it was this \ judicious trimming whi",L elicited the applause amidst whioh he sat down. Unless, indeed, he ''resumed bis sea amia applause " is the standing line reserved for all speakers alike m the daily prints. '
