FIFTY YEARS AGO

(From The Dunstan Times) In the absence of Mr Dalgleish, who was iodi-'pofed, Mr S. K McCarthy presided at the sitting of the Court at Ophir last week Notwi'hstanding the heavy frosts we are getting, the weather is most enjoyable on account of the pleasant sunny days. At a large and representative meeting at Ophir last Wednesday, it was de cided to revive the Ophir Medical Club Good progress is being made with the work of ballasting the Otago Central railway line fiom Hyde to Ryan s C rossing and the line should be iead\ for I rathe by the end of July. It is also hoped that the line will be opened to Wedderburn within a year. We regret to report that scarletina has broken out at Blacks arid that the school there Ins had to be closed. We hear that a few enthusiasts ate trying to arrange for to-morrow afternoon a hockey match, to be played on the ice, between Alexandra and Cl)de. Mr George Fenwick, editor of the .Otago Daily Times, has left on a three months’ trip to America While there he will enquire into the working of the linotype machine. Last week we mentioned that the Moa dredge was being shifted down to the lower end of the famous Frenchman’s J’oini and that many of the old j miners predict that the dredge will be very successful there and likely to top the record. Well, results suggest that the miners were not unduly optimistic for the Moa last week dredged up 4o}4o zs of gold in the first 5 shifts and a further in the next three days. We congratulate the proprietors on having acquired such a valuable claim and Dr Hyde on the manner in which he has engineered the fortunes of this dredge. On Wednesday a meeting convened by Mr Thomas Wilson was held at Ophir for the purpose of discussing the question of the rabbit pest and what steps should be taken in approaching the Government for cheap wire-netting. A number of resolutions dealing with same were passed and will be forwarded together in a petition to the Minister of Lands. A number of Mr J. D. Buchanan’s bachelor friends assembled in the Dunstan Hotel on Wednesday last, to bid him farewell on the eve of his departure for Wellington, where he is to marry Mias Fache (formerly of Clyde). Mr M, J, Staunton was in the chair and in proposing the toast of the guest he extended best wishes for his happiness and prosperity. Mr A. E- Gye and Mr Tom Beveridge also spoke. Songs were contributed by Messrs G. Jeffery, H. E. Stevens, H. Gye, H, Huestou and T. Beveridge... On Tuesday afternoon Mr Buchanan (foreman of the Dunstan Times) was presented with a handsome wedding present (a chased silver teapot) the gift of bis fellow employees. Our Cromwell correspondent writes : I hear that a couple of our townsmen, when in Queenstown* the other day, extended an invitation to members of the Queenstown Fire Brigade to visit Cromwell in the event of a brigade being formed here. Well, considering the fact that one of the gentlemen is a bit full blown and bumptions more especilaly when away from home, nevertheless the idea is an excellent one and has much to commend it, although a bit presumptuous. —Dredging Returns
