TUNNEL UNDER THAMES
Tenders have now been accepted for preliminary work on the oft-discuased Thames tunnel between Dartford and Purfleet, to become an important link between Essex and Kent. The first step is the construction of a pilot tunnel, at a cost of approximately £300,000. This will have an internal diameter of 12ft and a length of 900 yds. . . An estimate by the Ministry of Transport puts the final cost of the main tunnel at £3,200,000. The Ministry of Transport estimate has recalled to architects a ‘similar project discussed in 1798. The estimate for the tunnel of 130 years ago, made by the engineer who first broached the idea and spent several years generating interest in it, was £30,000. The plan was finally abandoned in 1810. The tunnel is to be more than a mil© long, exclusive of open approaches. There will be a carriage way of 20ft, with a protected path on either side. Fresh air ventilation will be provided. The tunnel will be constructed by means of a shield driven by compressed air through shafts considerably over 100 ft deep, 900 yds apart, and sited on each side of the Thames.
