INSOMNIA EPIDEMIC
Au epidemic of insomnia in Britain has assumed alarming proportions. The habit of keeping late hours, getting the brain out of the way of regular sleep, the speed and excitement of modern life, the noise of traffic, and'the long, light evenings are all causes. One of the chief factors in insomnia is worry—worry over business, emotional disturbances, grief or anxiety. A state of unalleviated tension also plays an important part. Among those whose insomnia can be attributed to this cause is Mr Baldwin, who has very wisely been resting at Chequers. If sleeplessness is due to any serious disease that trouble must be dealt with. Where this does not apply much can be done to overcome insomnia by efficient ventilation, a comfortable bed, raising the foot of the bed, cradling the bedclothes, and a hot drink before retiring. Some people use auto-suggestion successfully. Others keep the mind blank, place themselves in certain positions, count sheep, or associate their mind with certain thoughts. Lie easily in bed, close your eyes, and forget that you can’t sleep. The chances are that you will then sleep quickly and soundly.
