FOOTBALL.
Mr C G. I’oiler, the well-known Rugby footballer, decided recently to go abroad, and is now on his way to Gan ad a. He had had in mind lor some time the idea of making a trip to England, but before leaving Wellington for Canada he stated that in the meantime lie would make Vancouver his headquarters. During last season Roller captained New Zealand in all four tests against the Rrilish team, and after the fourth test he stated definitely that he would be retiring from the game at the end ol the season He hoped, however, that he would be able to assist the gams in directions other than a player. Some tune ago advice was received from Canada that the Rugby authorities there were eager to engage a coach So far as is known Porter did not consider making an application for the position at the time, but it is expected that on his arrival in Canada a very strong request will be made to him to take an active part in the game there. At a conference of country delegates and the O. R. F. Li. held at JDunedin it was resolved to bring an Eastern districts team, a South Otago team, a combined West Otago ami Tuapcka team, and a combined Vincent and Maniototo team to Dunedin, the country teams to play each other on August 6th, and a combined team to play a metropolitan team on Saturday, August S. The following lixtures were approved:—West Otago v Tuapcka, at Roxburgh or Millers Flat, on July 25; and Maniototo v Vincent, July 25, at Ranfurly. The matches between Vincent and Tuapeka, West Otago and South Otago, and Maniototo and Eastern Districts were left to the respective sub-unions to arrange
