FOOTBALL.
♦ ZINGAKI 10, v. MATAKANLT 0. (Special CorresponclenL) The 11)31 season of the good old game ol' Kugby Football was ushered in at Umakau on Saturday afternoon last, when the Zingari Richmond (Dunedin) played a friendly game with DJatakanui. Considering that the great majority of the players have not handled a. ball since last season the standard of play was quite good. The home (earn was not at full strength while during the game lost a couple of players (Little and Sandy Alexander) owing to injuries. The visitors were a good deal the lighter side, but were nippier and faster than their opponents, and deserved their victory. It was a beautiful day and there was a good crowd of spectators when the visitors kicked off. Play was ragged at the olarl, with Zingari having somewhat .the better of the argument. The (irst scon? came when a visiting forward marked and kicked a goal. Ifcazlcwood was playing a good game and he made a nice opening, which ended in a try, Heazlawood converted and the score was Bto nil at half time. There had been a few bright and spectacular Pits of play when the visiting backs secured and showed cleverness in cutting in, passing and straight running.
Hill I'loiuslon came un in the second lull' and Malak. showed improved Conn. Play was mostly confined to (lie forwards, with occasional bright Hashes of passing hy I lie visiting hacks. From one ol these Proctor scored after ilea/dewood liad made a good opening, and the latter converted. Both packs were at thys stage going well and life back play was mostly eonlined to Proctors side, and he was making the most of ids opportunities, finishing up by scoring a nice try. The visitors were attacking in the closing stages. For the winners Hea/dewood and Proctor (2) were responsible for much good play Hea/dewood at fullhack was always a tower of strength to his side, and the way lie turned defence into attack by running up and starting Ids backs going was a feature of the game. His line-kicking was good and only one shot at goal went astray, Proctor, left wing, is a hard straight runner, who repeatedly beat three or four men. For the home team Mick Flannery, Bill (Jlouston and Jack Donnelly were outstanding. I'rank Donnelly was frequently seen to advantage and on three occasions extricated his side from danger. Mr W. Wilson ably controlled the game which was played in a very friendly spirit.
