AMAZING BURGLARY.
Furs and jewellery to the value of £2OOO were stolen on the night of January 3, from Beedingwood, Horsham, Sussex, the residence of the Hev. E. D JU. Harvey. • The burglary was committed, Mr j Harvey said, while he and his family were at dinner. “All the property, ” He, said, “was taken from the bedroom over the dining- room, and the men must have been in the room at least half an hour. At 8.15, a maid was in the room. At 8.45, she returned and found the door locked on the inside. “When I tried the door and failed to move it, I took a ladder to the window and entered through it. The room was in darkness, and I stumbled against the safe which had been dragged from the far side of the room to the window. It weighs at least 2cwt, and must have required two men to move it. “The thieves had found the kev of tne safe. It was open and emptied entirely of the jewellery, which had been stored there. The wardrobe had also been emptied of the furs belonging to my wire. Jewellery and silver ornaments about the room had also been taken. “It is a mystery to me how the men were able to move the heavy safe a distance of several yards, right over our heads without giving a sign of their presence. My wife, my son, and his wife, were in the dining room with me. In a room near by were\ the servants, but none of us heard a sound. “There were marks on the windowledge, which showed the thieves had used a rope ladder to enter and to leave the room. The house is quite close to the roadway, and the men would have been on view to anyone passing while they were on the ropeladder.” \ It is believed that the thieves/ made their} escape in a motor car.
