BIG DAY AT KANPURLY. Maniototo v. Vincent. Home team wins B match by 13 to 3. Vincent wins A 8 t 3. Early on Saturday morning the weather was anything but promising, and indeed the trip to Ranfurly was decidedly cold and rather dismal, but at mid-day the City of the Plains was bathed in glorious sunshine, and the afternoon was a beautiful one. Great interest was taken in the meeting of the two old rivals, and it was not surprising to see a record gate—the takings amounting to £72 Owing to the recent wet weather the field was not in good order, there being several s'imy patches, while the clay cricket pitch in the centre of the field was in a dreadful state, so bad indeed that one wonders why the local club had not turfed it at the beginning of the season.

When the teams took the field it was plain that the J teds were a good stone heavier thau the visitors, who were represented by a _ young light team, with a nippy set of backs. Flay had not been long in progress when a kick by Haurahan was charged down and good play by O'Malley ended in Duffy scoring near the posts. The try was converted. Maniototo 5, Vincent 0

The Greens attacked strongly, and M Scott made a good but unsuccessful attempt at a penalty. The big Red forwards were worrying their lighter opponents but the backs were defending well Bruhne kicked through and Scott took the ball in his stride, ran straight and after beating several opponents enabled Kelly to score. The home team pressed strongly and their full back potted, while a moment later a penalty kick missed. Offside play saved th« Greens, but the Reds returned when they missed another easy kick. On changing ends O'Connor saved a hot attack. Bell and Thomson were responsible for good play, but a Red forward rush swept play right to the goal mouth, where in a scramble the ball hit the post, a Red man dived over. An easy kick missed. The Greens attacked strongly, and Hanrahan worked the blind side, narrowly missing a score. A free kick saved the .Reds, but Pierce made a good dash, but Bruhns saved. .In the closing stages the Reds made a forward rush, O'Malley scoring, l'adget converted, and the game ended Maniototo 13, Vincent 3. Mr McLachlan was an impartial referee. For the winners, Bruhn was good at full-back, Ramsay and Thurlow also playing well in the backs. Of a good lot of forwards, O'Mally, Duffy and Johns were prominent. For Vincent Scott Kelly, O'Connor and Thomson Avere the pick of the backs, and Pierce and Scrymgeour were most prominent in the forwards. Davis Lewis was suffering from a bad hand and was replaced by Pringle On taking the field both teams had a good reception, and a very pleasing feature of both games was the friendly spirit of the players, and the impartiality of the spectators, good play, no matter by whom, being applauded. This, however, is no exception, as there has always been "a happy relationship between the two counties. Vincent won the toss and the home side played against a bright, sun. At the outset Marslin was responsible for good play, but McSkimming marked and found the line with a good kick. Hannay forced from a centring kick and relieved the pressure. Play was very ragged, and confined to the forwards. Inder put in a good kick, and Hall missed a fair attempt at a penalty. Offside play gave the Greens relief A forward rush, headed by Quinn and Clouston, but Pall pulled it up by niarkiug. In stopping a rush Nicholson received a nasty kick on the back of the head, but was able to continue in a couple ot minutes. Jack Moran stopped a. dangerous Red rush and got in a fine kick. From a scrum near Vincent's line Leyden tried the blind side, but Hannay got him. Tom Clouston marked and & foment later Margin with a

good kick gained a lot of ground. Hall was playing a great game at full-back, fielding and kicking splendidly. Sandy Alexander marked in the face of a vigorous rush and found the line. Ball cut in, but his pass went astray and the Greens got a free kick. The Eeds were getting the ball from the scrum, about twice out of three times at this stage, but the backs were doing little good with it. Frank Donnelly was responsible for good play, and Hall taking the ball in his stride raced up the field and put in a strong kick. Leyden and Leask further improved matters for the Reds, but a penalty sent them back. The Green backs now got going and Donnelly and Nicholson made good runs. Hannay made a great attempt to kick a penalty from near haff way. From a passing rush Frank Donnelly potted. The leather went between the posts but below the bar The Reds continued to attack and a pretty passing rush saw Nicholson score a nice try near the corner. Jack Hannay, with a great kick sent the leather fairly between the uprights Vincent 5, Maniototo 0.

From the kick out Hannay made a dash but Hall saved well. From a passing rush Donnelly had another pot but the ball went wide and Hall forced. Davis got offside and Hannay had a shot from halfway, the ball falling short. Leask returned to halfway and just on half time Tom Glouston stopped a Red forward rush, The second spell opened sensationally, Marslin narrowly missing a score, in a rush over the line The Greens attacked and Moran and Kinnaird took play right to the Red line. Fk Donnelly was taking a lot of stopping and a sure try was missed when Nicholson lost the ball. Kinnaird broke away and danger threatened, but Rat Moran missed a difficult pass. The Reds rallied and took play to mid-field where Leyden cleverly sent Leask away to score a fine try. Hall missed an easy kick Vincent 5, Maniototo 3

On resuming Nicholson, who fielded beautifully all day, picked up right off his toes and put in a long punt which put the Greens on attack. Good play by Hore relieved and Dowdle was promnient in a good rush- Hall had a pot at goal but the leather did not rise sufficiently. McSkimming, who showed a lot of pace, put in a good run and the home team attacked strongly. Encouraged by their supporters the Reds strove desperately to score, but the defence was sound. Marslin saved well and Pat Moran and Jack Donnelly further improved the position, but the Reds came back. Alexander and Frank Donnelly beat off strong attacks, the latter finding touch at halfway. Jack Hannay missed a difficult penalty kick and right on time Tom Clouston secured from loose play and ran over to score. Hannay made a good attempt to convert. The game then ended Vincent 8, Maniototo 3. Mr Thompson was an excellent referee, who appeared to give general satisfaction.

For Maniototo, Hail at full-back played splendidly, particularly in the first spell. Leyden and Inder were the pick of the others. Of a good team of forwards Davis and Dowdle were the most prominent. The Vincent Backs all played well, F. Donnelly and Nicholson deservingspecial mention- The forwards were a very even lot, Clouston and Donnelly showing up. Tat Moran showed that he is no back number, while Neil Kinnaird fully justified his inclusion, playing with great dash in the second spell.

In the evening the teams were entertained at a dinner and Smoke 'O at Donald's Boarding House where they had a happy time, and a splendid spread. The usual toasts were honoured and Mr J. I Fraser, was an ideal chairman. The Combined Team.

In all probability Heriot will play Matakanui at Omakau for the White Horse Cup on Saturday, but it is not definitely settled. If the match is to be played our readers will be notified by extra from this office.
