A NOTABLE CAREER.
The Marquis of Lausdowne, who died at the beginning of June, after a few hours’ illness, bad a remarkable career. He was born in 1845 and was only 23 when ho was made a Junior Lord of the Treasury, and afterwards Undersecretary for War in Gladstone’s first administration. In 1880 ho became Under-Secretary for India, but dissented from his chief’s land policy for Ireland, and left the Ministry. He was congenially employed from 1883 for live years as Governor-General of Canada, whence he went to India as Viceroy. His connection with Liberalism was severed by the Gladstoniau Homo Rule policy, and on his return Lord Salisbury in 1895 made him Secretary for War. A notable feature of his career at the War Office was the homeric duel with the Commander-in-Chicf, Lord WolseIcy, upon the floor of the House of Lords.’concerning the status and powers of the heads of departments, which Lord Lausdowne decided to reorganise as the result of the Blunders of the Boer War. But Lord Lausdowne’s chief work as a Secretary of State was done at the Foreign Office, to which ho went in, 1900. He handled the Boer War settlement. the incursions of Russia in Asia, and the Boxer rising in China; but hi S' great coup was the. AngloFrench agreement of 1904, which established the Entente. This was followed by the Anglo-Japanese alliance. On the outbreak of war, he unhesitatingly supported the Liberal Government s measures for meeting _ the , national emergency, and later joined the first Coalition'in 1913 as Minister without portfolio.
