FOOTBALL.
(By “Drop kick.”
’ Tuapeka 6, Vincent 3. Owing to sickness and other causes the team that represented Vincent was not anything like full strength, notable absentees being Townsend, Marsliu, Sanders, Schieb, D. Campbell and Bell. However, the side that did go, although beaten by 6 to 3, put up a creditable performance, and by no means disgraced the county. It was a good day for football, but the ground was heavy and greasy. The home team forwards apparently enjoyed the conditions, for they played with great dash, and were responsible lor their sides victory. The following were the teams — Vincent Full-back, R. Campbell (capt.); | Hannay, Hayes, Clarkson; five-eighths, Woodhousc, W. Campbell; i K. Sutherland ; forwards Carline, W. Noble , Kirkwood, N. Campbell, J. Noble, 11. Thompson, Gawn, W, J. McArthur (wing). Tnapeka—Full-back, T. Michelle; -| D. Manuel, J. McDonald, J.McPherson five-eighths, J. Pannctt, L. Fckhofi; £ G. Toms; forwards, H. Jones, G. Me Donald, J. Morrin, Gilkison, McCallum McLaughlan, V’ Parker, C. Tull. Vincent kicked off and play was taken into the home team’s territory and there was a force down almost at once. McArthur-gained a lot of ground for his side, but Tuapeka, chiefly from line-out play (where they knocked on repeatedly- without being penalised) took play to the other end ■where Me Me Layghlan scored. The kick at goal missed.
Tuapcka 3, Vincent 0. • The Tuapeka forwards were getting the ball from the scrum, but it seldom went past Ecklioff, whose only means ol attack appeared to be a short punt that invariasly found the safe hands of Bob Campbell. Hayes stopped a dangerous forward rush and found the touch with an excellent kick. Hannay further improved matters for Vincent, a big punt going out in Tuapeka’s 25. Here Clarkson secured and he centred well, allowing Jim Noble, who followed up splendidly all day, to score a good try. Hannay missed the kick, Tuapeka 3, Vincent 3. Gilkison and McLaughlan were prom inent in a good rush widen was well stopped by Sutherland, and an exchange of kicks by the backs ended in the Green’s favour. Ecklioff was saving his side, while Michelle at full-back also frequently stopped what looked like trouble. Carline got away from loose play in Tuapeka’s 25 and just missed scoring. There was no further score at half time.
Qn changing ends the visitors made a tine rush and Hannay made a good run. There was a lot of kicking amongst the backs, until Hannay securing set off, and burst through the tackle of a couple of opponents. He raced up the field, with Woodhouse and McArthur in support, and only one man to pass, but a knock-oh within a yard of the line lost what shonld have been a certain try. The home side then set up a hot attack. They missed a couple of fairly easy penalty kicks, and had the Green’s penned on their line. Bon Sutherland drove them back with a good line kick, but they were soon back again. There was a great struggle on che line; the defence was solid, but the nome team’s efforts were at last rewarded, Godfrey Toms diving over. The kick at goal failed, and the game ended Tuapeka 6, Vincent 3.
Mr T. Waigth was referee. For the winners Alichelle, Toms and Eckhotf were the pick of the backs, while Parker and Gilkison were prominent in a good pack. For the Greens the backs were all safe, Bob Campbell and Hannay being the pick. Wit. McArthur played well at wing, and Carline and Jim Noble were perhaps the best of an even pack.
West Otago (Tapanui) have challenged Vincent for the Topp Cup for September 25th. This is the day set apart for the schools seven-a-sidc tournament, but it is suggested that both it and the county match could be played the same day. It would certainly be a big draw. Tnapeka, no doubt as a result ot their win on Saturday, tulle of having a go for the Topp Cup. Let ’em all conic!
