Some twelve months ago the county engineer (Mr Black) was instructed lo report re the cost of concreting the gutters in the main street of Clyde. So far (apparently) nothing has been done in the matter. The present gutters are. both unsightly and insanitary and it is moreover a sheer impossibility to keep them clean. Clyde had a hurried visit from the Prime Ministei, and the Hon McLeod and Hawk den on Tuesday last, when they were waited on by a deputation from the Earnscleugh Water Board, who asked that the Sanciy Point aim Blackmans be separate schemes The reason adduced was that the settlers objected to contribute towards the cost (£o,ooo} of the Blackman’s scheme which only dealt with 237 acres. Another reason advanced was that the P.W.D. had contracted with the Sandy Point settlers and now wanted to saddle them with an additional charge for another scheme. Mr Coates did not give them much satisfaction, but promised to have the legal aspect of the question looked into.
