MINING.
—— The Keystone Boring Machine arrived at Clyde by Wednesday’s train, its destination being one of the Electric dredges at Cromwell. We understand the machine is to be fitted up on board one of the dredges so as to test the bed of the river to a greater depth than has hitherto been done. It is to be hoped the borer will < prove more successful in its operations than it did at Naseby. St. Bathans people are approaching the Government for a subsidy to test the deep ground in the St. Bathans district by driving and tunnelling. The estimated cost of the entire work is £I4OO. The application was supported by the Maniototo County Council. The dredgemaster of the Rising Sun reports for the week ending July 10th Dredged 133 hours, and baled the silt out of half of the old cut, and will clean out the other half next week. The river is now falling fast, but there is still a considerable amount of drift travelling. The bottom was mostly sandstone, and prospects continue fair.
