Major Gough starred for a ridge overlooking Poort, asking Col. Stewart, who was marching an hour behind him, to co-operate. Ihe Boer movement was evidently a trap. When Major Gough | got within reach, the Boer-suddenly ' and in considerable strength, ats backed the front and right flank. After severe fighting the Briish were overpowered, losing three guns, though the sisht and-breech-blocks were first destroyed.
