NEW ZEALAND PATRIOTIC FUND.

The secretary of the Otago patriotic fund has received the following communication and enclosures from Mr James Mills : London, 17th July, 1901. The Secretary Otago Patriotic Fund, Dunedin. Dear Sir, —Following up my former communication, I enclose statement just received from the secretary of the Lord Mayor, showing the chief amounts received from New Zealand in connection with the Transvaal war fund, and.the separate funds to which they have been allocated. This return, if it has not already reached you from some other source, will be of great interest. You will note that the total remittances from Otago and Southland are stated to be as follows :

The fact that such a large proportion of those who returned by the Tagus were invalided proved a heavy' drain on that reserve fund. collected here was forwarded to the Lord Mayor, the sum of £5,000 was retained, being probably a larger proportion than anv other committee in the colony kept in" their own hands.
