THE CONSOLIDATED FUND

The statement of receipts and expenditure of the Consolidated Fund for the first quarter of the financial year is published in the 'Gazette.' The revenue totals £1,133,839, as against £1,107,421 for the. corresponding quarter of last year; and territorial revenue amounted to £27,721, as against £27,631. The aggregate was £1,161,560, as against £1,135,052—an increase of £26,508, while the increase in the previous year was £55,628. Customs show a decrease of £24.147, stamps £1,455, and Land and Income Tax £6BB. The increases were: Postal £4.161, beer duty £1,863, railways £35,376, registration £875, marine £4Ol, miscellaneous £10,032, and territorial £BO. The revenue was increased by receipts in aid £57,000 and recoveries £5,693, making the total revenue for the quarter £1,224,253. The expenditure shows an increase of £148.432: last year there was a decrease of £19,315. The permanent appropriations for the past quarter totalled £860.694, or £58.787 more than in the corresponding quarter; and the departmental expenditure totalled £632,493, or £89,645 more than in the June quarter of last year. The actual expenditure was thus £1,493,187, while the revenue from all sources was £1,224,253. In the Public Works Fund there was a balance to credit at the beginning of the quarter of £232,516, and proceeds of sale of debentures brought in £1,000,514. It appears that 4 per cent, debentures to the amount of half a million were sold in London during the quarter. The receipts, including the balance brought forward, was £1,308,051. On the expenditure side it is shown that £417,213 was spent on public' works, as against £151,640 in the corresponding quarter of last year. The expenditure on railways totalled- £268,133, while the expenditure and repayments together totalled £622,023, leaving the public fund in credit to the amount of £686,028 on June 30.
