An accident of a shocking nature happened abont 8,30 on Friday even* isg> resulting in the death of an elderly woman named Nancy Littles wood Sneyd and her son and bis wife being seriously, and several others slightly injured. It appears that the Reception Committee had erected a stand at the junction of Dee and Tay streets for the purpose of giving a display of fireworks, and that a bomb instead ot going skywards, went in a horizontal direction, striking several people who were standing lound. Mrs Sneyd. sen;, was struck about in the face and killed outright, while he- son Charles F. Sneyd and his wife were seriously wounded. Mrs Sneyd is severely cut about the Lee and has some injuries and bruises about her arms and legs. Her bus-, band sustained a ghastly contused wound on the thigh, in addition to other lacerations: Both were removed to the hospital, and are in a critical coudition. A grandson ol the deceased lady was also slightly injured, in addition to seventl others who were standing close by. The deceased was formerly resident at Makarewa, but had been living with her son at Bluff of late. Several other accidents occurred as the result of the display of fireworks, but we could not gain any reliable particulars concerning them, As soon as the accident occurred, Detective MclU veuey asked those in charge of fire* works displays to desist, which they did.
