A VETERAN ARTIST.
LONDON, January 3.
Sir John Tenniel, who has been on the staff of ‘ Punch ’ for fifty years, and whose political cartoons have gained wide celebrity, has retired from active work. Sir John is*eighty-one years of age, and his place will be taken by Edward Linley Sambourne, who has been on the staff for thirty-four years, and was for some time past cartoonist with Sir John Tenniel. He is the sole survivor of that celebrated quartet of artists—Charles Keene, Du Maurier, Tenniel, and Sambourne —whose talents largely raised ' Punch ’ to its present high position and influence.
