The Queen has approved of the following promotions and appointments to the Order of the Bath and the Distinguished Service Order respectively, in recognition of the services of the officers named during the war in South Africa:—K.C.B. Rear-Admiral Robert Hastings Harris, K.C.M.G., C.B. (admiral of the Cape squadron); Captains Sir Edward Chichester, Bart., C.M.G. ; Edward Pitcairn Jones, R.N. ; Reginald Charles Prothero, R.N. ; John Edward Bearcroft, R.N. : William Blake Fisher, R.N. ; Major Alfred Edward Marchant Roli. D.S.O. — Lieutenant George Edward Hunt, R.IS. ; Lieutenant Walter Thomas Creswell Jones, R.M.L.I. ; Surgeon Charles Clarke Macmillan, M.B. ; Lieutenant William Jarvis Colquhcun,. Victorian Navy ; Lieutenant Nicholas William Chiaggari, Natal Naval Volunteers. The following promotions have been made for services in South Africa : —Commander William L. Grant Spencer, Y. De Horsey to be captains in Her Majesty's fleet ; Lieutenants Francis W. Melvill, Arthur Halsey, Herbert W. James, James A. Ferguson, to be commanders in Her Majesty's fleet. The above promotions, as well as those of Captain Arthur H. Limpus and Commanders Frederick C. A. Ogilvie, Frederick W. Dean, and Algernon W. Heneage, to be additional to the establishment of captains and commanders. Lieutenants George F. E. Nugent, Eric F. C. Back, John E. Drummond are noted for early promotion. Midshipman Thomas F. J. L. Wardle, William R. Ledgard, William W. Sillem, George H. Long, Herbert S. W. Boldero, Richard T. Down, James A. G. Troup, Reginald B. C. Hutchinson, Herbert E. W. C. Whyte, General L. Hodson, and Richardson E. W. Ivirby are noted for early promotion on qualifying for the rank of lieutenants. Fleet Surgeon James Porter, M.A., M.8., to be deputy inspector-general of hospital and fleets ; Staff Surgeon Freak Lilly to be Fleet Surgeon ; Ernest C. Lomas to be Staff Surgeon ; Assistant Paymaster Bertram C. Allen to be paymaster.
