Mining.

The Magnetic dredge has again struck good wash, her last three days operations resulting in a yield of oOoz. As this dredge has a lot of summer ground which is known to be highly auriferous returns of this sort may be expected for some time to come. Our Cromwell correspondent writes;— The dredges here have all shut down for the holidays. The majority resume work on the sth.

i The Vincent Extended is now completed. We understand that permanent operations I will be commenced immediately after the i holidays. ' The •Sailors' Creek Dredge, Victori?, owned by an Auckland syndicate, got 50oz for nine days. The previous return was Jjlbz 'l'4dwt for a fqrtnight's work. The yield has been regular since the gtapt, ypt the shares remain at the ridioulously low figure of 6s 3d. " The Merrimao dredge has been closed down until the river reaches #ad

The Oven’s River Dredge, Victoria, for 13 days washed up 84oz. As this is the wash-up good things are expected. It is pleasing to notice that the New < Alexandra has got onto something better, : and a number of her more optimistic shareholders express the opinion that the ] montu’s trial will be the forerunner of a profitable career. Last week’s operations . resulted in a return of 20oa odd. ( (The Leaning Rock pontoons will be ( within six weeks' lime. The (whole of the machinery is completed, and < has been shipped for Dunedin by the Jlyde Engineering Company. The erection of the Golden Run is ( tearly completed, and it is, expected that i he work will be finished early next month, i The Unity and Vincent dredges are shut iown for 10 days. A load of machinery (including buckets) for the Cairmuir dredge arrived on Wcdlesday last! _ 1 A load ofmachinery forthe Monte Christo Company’s dredge arrived yesterday, 'fitting-up - operation s arc to be commenced i arly next week. Since commencing dredging about the beginning of September the Grey River dredge has won close on GOOoz. The company have paid off a debt of £(500, and have ’ now declared, a dividend. The river is about G feet above normal j and is now falling. ] A great quantity of machinery for dredges in this district is lying at the H Wedderburn, and although a large number of waggons are continually on the road they are unable to keep the sued clear. Material for the following companies awaits forwarding : —Dunstan Lead, Alexandra Lead. Monte Christo, Vincent Extended, Boundary Creek, and odds and ends for various companies, a large boat for the Vincent Extended, and a smaller ' S one for the Gentle Annie. This latter is i addressed via Kingston, and how it- comes , to be at the Wedderburn is a matter for conjecture. The contractors for the Arthurs Point 1 dredge are pushing ahead with all speed < their work. Some 10 or 12 men areemply- | ed on board at the present time. Besides . having the gantry in position, the tumbler 1 framing is just about completed. The 1 latter is a massive piece of work, and has [ been skilfully built. The winches arc in ■ position, as also are the revolving rollers to take the screen, Four engineers arc < now erecting the machinery most of which ( is on the ground. The boiler was expected i to be landed near the claim yesterday or ‘ to-day. The building site of the dredge ‘ „ was wisely chosen as it is more convenient c for getting all the material to the pontoons. Mr Sutherland, w-ho has been superintending the construction up to , the present • must be complimented on the tradesman - '<■ like manner in which everything has been c carried one so far. It is expected that ( the dredge will be working about the , middle of February. . The boiler for the Half-way House dredge t was landed on the claim yesterday afternoon. Just as the ladder on the Vincent dredge w r as being raised, preparatory to closing down for the holidays, some part of the hanger gave way. The ladder had to be raised at once, and the hands were compelled to work all' day Sunday and Monday before they were enabled to do so. V ■- - 1 - ■ MILLER’S FLAT. (from our own^irfspokdeet) The Majestic is now ready for a start. The Electric is all nit finished. The . Golden Beci has been placed in position and commenced droeging on aday last. Messrs Cockburn Lafeyaur Grant have been granted a Coal lease or.*> An dermans Flat and are going tocoinmeilce to open up the same without d.lay. Taiswill be a great boon to the dir-.net. as we are apresent dependant to Coal Crecie for our Coal supply, and the large quantities of coal that will shortly be required for dredging purposes so that the supply from Coal Creek would not be able to meet the demand, and a coal pit in the district means a considerable saving both for domestic and dredging purposes. Great quantites of timber are daily passing on the way for drfiges further tip the river, notably the Golcrn Chain and Golden Ring. .. i SUMMARY OF DREDGINGTRETURN S 8 The following table shows the total yield for each week of the present year |H O f dredges whose returns are made public ; Dredges Oz dwt gr
