VINCENT EXTENDI. • A most successful trial run of the Viricent Extended was held last Friday. Mr d( Payne's representative (Mr Pecs) who inspected the dredge, was grsatly pleased rf with the w irking of the machinery. Payne, consulting engineer, Dunedm, and I the work of ereefciug the machinery was gl entrusted to Mr W. H. Scott, engineer, late , of Dunedin. The pontoons were dux it oy : g . Messrs Baskett and Boa, and the opw and boiler were supplied by Messrs s \f Marshall and Son, England The rest of i the machinery was supplied by Johnston / and Sons, Melbourne. The principal di- / mensions are as follow :-Poddoo « 105 ft; depth, 7ft; port pontoon, lOrt wide, B starboard, lift wide. The main engine is a compound, surface-condensing one, ot lb nominal horse power, the high..prepare g cylinder being 8 inches, and the lower , 0 , Assure 12 inches diameter. The condenser, air pump, and centrifugal pump are below the deck ; the boiler is an internal fired one, fitted with injector, etc., and twin | safety valves, direct spring weighted, and | is 20 hj. p. The buckets are driven by tour endless gropes, and the centrifugal pump ; and elevator by Bin Dick's belong. Ihe elevator cSi Jck tailings to 20 feet above , the water, and is driven from bottom tumbler Ihe ladder is 72 feet, and can dredge to a depth of 55 feet below water; IT is fitted with buckets of 5 feet capacity the links being 2 feet centres, and pins S* diameter. The-winch has six barrells and is self-contained, having the engines fitted to the framework. The barrells are set in motion by sliding clutches, no friction - clutches being used.
