The Dunstan Times. CLYDE : FRIDAY, DEC 11, 1896.

The results of the recent general election must, we think, be hailed with satisfaction all general over the Colony, As election, far as latest returns are available, it seems ■that the Government can count on a majority of 14, viz.—Ministerialists, 40; Opposition, 26 ; Independent, 4. This is undoubtedly a great improvement on the state of things in the last House. The personnel of the new House is a great improvement, several objectionable members having, been relegated to private life. Such men as Messrs Rolleston, Richardson, Scobie • Mackenzie, and J; W. Thomson will be of great advantage, to the Colony. We think it will be also, of- advantage to the Government, m it will make them more careful o£ their legislationf>nd administration than perhaps they have been in the past. Of course, we notice the names of several good men, who acted in the okl House, now off the list of "Parliament representatives, some having been prevented from again

standing for parliamentary honors owing to private business, while . others have been defeated. But on the whoie, we think our readers j ran rest assured that the present i Parliament will be one of the best that have been in New Zealand, With reference to the Tuapeka election, we congratulate the Hon. Mr Larnach on being again returned as our member. His majority is much smaller than was generally expected it would be, but we were glad to notice that the electors at tins end of the electorate supported him well. Neither Mr Larnach nor the Government can j afford to forget this part ofj the district after last Friday The Opposition candidate polled very well, and seems to have ad- ; vanced strongly in public favor! after his election address. It is quite evident that Mr Rawlins has made many friends in the district, and we do not think he need be much disappoint el at the result. As will be seen in another column, we notice he seems to have taken his defeat well, and this is certainly another thing in his favor,
