We would draw special attention to the business advertisement of Mr J. Nieper, butcher, Alexandra. Mr Nioper informs us that it is his intention to make the small goods line a specially in his business, He has engaged the services of Mr Clark, of Dunedin, who, we believe, is well known as a good tradesman* With reference to the application of Mr J, Allan and another, for 6 heads of water from Chatto Creek, which was adjourned to enable the Warden to inspect the rice, Mr Warden McCarthy (accompanied by Mr Gow, liispactor of Miiies, Mr L. There was a dispute about the ownership of those that the judge awarded the prize to, and the matter was referred to Messrs Howden and Dick, the judges at the late show, who have decided in Mr Noble's favor. Tue Hon. Mr Larnach has given notice of the following questions in the House of Representatives. In the Warden's Court at Alexandra, last Monday, Mr Warden McCarthy drew attention to the fact that miners frequently apply for races across county roads with' out staling the fact in their application, or giving any notice to the County. His Worship said he spoke feelingly, as in many cases good roads had been illegally destroyed. He recommended more care iu the future, and that every applicat.on should state " no road interfered with." A steady emigration of the Chinese residents of Alexandra has been going o.i quietly for some time, the o!d boarding houses and stores in the main two exceptions, being now empty. They havo removed to newly erected premises near the banks of the river, close to the Chinese gardens, some eight or nine new buildings having there sprung into existence. Some of them are of considerable size, one being 36ft by 40ft, built of dry « cob.' This is as it should be. If we must have the chddren of the Flowery Land amongst us, let them have their own quarters, and not live check by jowl with folk to whom many of their habits are offensive,

We learn from the ' Tuapeka Times ' that at the last meeting of the Tuapeka County Council, a letter was received trom Mr Eobb. Gilkison, Clyde, stating that he had been appointed dtlegate to represent the Vincent County Council at the County Conference at Wellington, opening on the 19th inst,, and he would like to meet the local County's delegate (if they dreided to appoint one) on the way through and confer with him, the interests of both counties being, in his opinion, almost identioal.—lt was resolved to inform Mr Gilkison that the Council had appointed the Hon. Mr Hugh Irvin, the oaretaker of the Molyneux Hydraulic Co's. water race, who is living near Chatto Creek, had his hut burnt down last Friday evening through the upsetting of a lamp. The place was built of wood, the fire only lasted about 10 minutes; aud it was impossible to save anything. There were two guns inside loaded and they both exploded. Mr Gunn. and several visitors staying at the Chatto Hotel, did what they could to try and save some of the contents of the bouse, but their efforts were unavailing; and Mr Irving lost everything.

OUB attention has been directed to a paragraph in the letter of the Clyde corre<« fpondent iu last week's " Witness," in which some uncomplimentary and most unwarranted remarks are made with reference to the Clyde Ladies' Guild. So far from there being any dissension in the ranks of the Guild, as is alleged by the correspondent, we are in a position to know that the members are working together with tbe utmobt harmony, and there is net the slightest ground for the remarks complained of. It seems a pity that the Witness correspondent should not make enquiries as to the truth or otherwise ofhis information, before attempting to turn into ridicule a society which is working diligently and harmoniously for a very laudable object.

"It is a pleasure to sell Chamberlain's Cough Remedy," says Stickney & Dentler, druggists, Republic, Ohio, " Because a customer after once using it, is almost certain to call for it when again in need of such a medicine. We sell more of it than of any other cough medicine we handle, and it always gives satisfaction." For coughs, colds and croup, it is without an equal. For sale by B. Naylor, Clyde; and J. Rivers, Alexandra.
