A GREAT FIRE.

'One ofthe' most destructive fires ihat ! >haa perhaps ever occurred in NEasgtfir commenced on the evening of 'Ndveniher 31 in the hnmenae upholegte*y Warehouses of Messrs Wylie wn'd LoikheaS. Each flat in tfce firetstorey building was stored with highly inflammable material, and the flumes ’quickly made'their way to the roof, indeed, befoie a single detachment of the Fire Brigade could arrive, the ■dhole block was one fiercely-burning ‘fitrnace, shooting forth flames which illuminated the district for ten miles* 'round. 'Water"was at hand in -abundance, and the combined brigades ot ‘Glasgow, Tar tide, and Govan made! the most-Strenuous efforts to gain the ■maStery'; but it was soon perceived, that tne block was doomed, and the 1 ■only hope left was to prevent the ►flames extending to the contiguous 'premised. That, however, was found impracticable, forspeedily'au immense block on the north side, in Mitchell street, became enwrapped in the ■•con, sflagration ; and ere the brigade could grajrple with this new danger the ’whole ot Wylie and Lockhead’s prei mrses came down with a crash like 'thunder. Half a dozen other build--7 ings, somo of them quite distant from the block, were soon dho on fire,* = amongst them being the large restan--1 rant in Mitchell lane, six storeys high, -of which nothing -soon remained but ' the blackened walls. The offices of the 1 Glasgow MmM na»rowly escaped destruction. £amgihe premise* Which lave suffered‘more-or less severely are shops belonging tojjawellers, furriers, -and «uuaio sellers, the large and '■valuable steeks? being destroyed or 'serioirily damaged Ithe large lace • and mantle warehouse df David Kemp and Sons, the warehouses of Messrs Stewart and Macdonald, with other ‘‘buildings, had their roofs burnt‘and •■stocks injured.
