ALEXANDRA
(from our own correspondent.) Contrary to tbe expectations ami doubtless greatly to the chagrin of many, the cln'eE municipal event of the year—the Mayoral Cup-was a dead failure there only beiiu; one starter, who accordingly for a quiet walkover was declared the winner, and claimed the st ikes. The damaging ■elf ets of a mistake of this ki d is. that the agents are in no way Mamed while the principal in the affair, who bad really nothing to do in the matter receives aU the castigation, not so much for the nnst 'ke as for trusting to those who could make it. Not that it matters to me one jot whether there was a contest or not, or who is Mayor, or in fact whether there is such a personage, yet when informed of the stupid blunder I was much annoyed. Ah, well, Mr James Rivers for a second year bolds the reins of government, and Mr Wm. Theyers must perforce wait for .moth r year, which he would not have had to do had there been a c ntest. However it is all over, and I do not know hut it is for the best, as had there been a contest n i end of bitterness of feeling would have bee i created, and perhaps many little things raked up and brought to the surface that are just as well left to ho in their present oblivion. With regard to the olfl.'e of Mayor it is one of undoubted honour, and I have ever held that whore there are able aspirants it should he a rolling one, and not hehl by one man for years in succession. And while giving Mr Rivers credit for all he has done, and will do during the coming year, I think Mr Theyers could have done equally as ranch, and therefore had tlie change been made no harm would have been done. The Presbyterians are working their very best to make their bazaar for the raising of funds to fence in their church a success. They have enliste 1 the sympathies and services of the ladies, and if the mare is to he made to go they will make it. For many reasons it is to he hoped they will be able to carry out their good intentions.
The bridge contractors are making decided headway with the pier on the east side of the river, it being raised now some 40 feel irnm the foundation. It is a grand piece of masonry, doing every credit to the designer. On the wo ks all told there are gome 30 men employed in quarrying, cutting and dressing, and laying the stones. I have little other news to give you this week.
