PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.
The Legislative Council carried the following motion “It is desirable the Government should take into consideration the present tariff of charges on railways, so as to make the working of the several lines realise a fair profit, or at least contribute their full share of receipts in aid of the revenue of the Colony. Mr Pyke gave notice that he would move “.That the House will not consent to the abolition of local subsidies until adequate provision has been made for carrying on local works.”
Mr Whitaker moved—“ That this House will to morrow re-olve into a Committee of the whole, to consider a respectful address to lie presented to his Kxoelcency the Governor, praying that he will cau<e a sum of L 200,000 to be ploced on Ihe Estimates as a grant to the Provincial District of Auckland for the formation of roads and bridges.” Mr Ormond moved for a return of all lands disposed of on deferred payments in each provincial district since the passing of the Land Act, 1877 ; such return to specify the acreage of each selection, the prices paid, and where situate ; also, wdiat expenditure has been incurred in opening such lauds for occupationThe motion was carried.
Ihe House went into Committee on a message from the Governor recommending that payment of members’ expenses be provided for by statute. The recommendation was adopted, and, on resuming, a bill to that effect was introduced, providing for the payment of members on the scale at present in force, The Miners’ Right Fees Reduction Bill was committed It was agreed that the bill should nit affect ihe Native lands. It was reported as amended, reada third time and passed. By the Legislative Council the Miners’ B'ghts Fees Reduction Bill was thrown out by 24 to 10.
