Victorian papers state that the KellvS were seen near Bonalla a month ago. They imposed a pledge of silence on those who saw them.
An Auckland telegram of the i.3th instant states that a run has taken place on Alburnia mine shares, which has sent them up from 17s to 50s, buyers being found at the latter figure. Further news is to the effect that they have broken down 3cwt. of picked stone, and a qmutity of specimens are on hand.
The Sandhurst mine-owners have abandoned the attempt at a reduction of wages, whilst protesting against the action of the Government. The funeral of the late Mr Charles Broad was largely attended, there being between three and four hundred persons present. In the Oainaru and Tiinaru districts the weather has been unusually cold and wintry. The crops are looking magnificent, but warm weather is now required.
Later news from Grahamstown with regard to the Albnrni.a mine prospects are still favorable, there being a good show of gold. Prices have not shown great fluctuation. Shares are quoted at from L4ss to L 4.
At Auckland, on the 15th instant, three larrikins were brought up, charged with causing a fire at, L W. Eaton’s premises on the Tuesday night previously 'They had collected and placed inflammable material near the stable-door and poured kerosine over them. They were remanded. On the same day. Macey Quintal, a solicitor practising at Tauranga, was brought up on a charge of forging a deed and remanded, bail being allowed.
At Christchurch on the 13th instant the settling on the Metropolitan Meeting took place. The following amounts were paid as stakes R. Ray, L79G 13s ; (I. Goodman, L 717 10s; W. Owen. Lls ; P. Butler, L 5. The son of Saxby (the famous weather prophet of a quarter of a century ago), who is in Melbourne gaol for bearing his wife, has been left 1.20,000 by his father.
Sir Hercules Robinson intends visiting the Sydney- Exhibition. It is generally reported that the Kellys are still concealing themselves in the Strathbogie Ranges. The toity-eight hours’ walking contest in Sydney was won by Edwards, who did 153 miles.
Tames Taylor, a clerk in the Treasury, Wellington, committed suicide on Monday. Money matters are said to be the cause. It appears that he placed the muzzle of a shot gun to his forehead and pulled the trigger with his fingers, the charge blowing the whole skull off.
A child of Mr Karney, Gabriel's Gully, was accidentally drowned in a water-race on Saturday afternoon.
The Torres STait mail steamer brings the news that the Seaspray went ashore at an island north of Cooktown, and that all her crew were massacred.
