SOMETHING LIKE A CLAIM.

The almost unparalleled richness of Mr llolverson's claim, near Hyde, is a theme of frequent remark, and many and contradictory are the predictions concerning it—whether it is, technically speaking, a ‘dead” a “ gutter,” a “ rich patch,” or simply a “ pot hole.” What it really is we (Mount Ida Chronicle) hesitate to give an opinion, and in which direction, outside his claim, the rich auriferous deposit tends has not yet been found out—the recent inclemency of the Wcarher preventing prospectors from sinking shafts in endeavoring to discover it. The further Mr Hplverson gets into his claim the greater the amount of treasure it yields. Last'week;; when the first day’s operations were cointnenced, 300z.’ was',"the result, the second (lay 480z., the third day, 90oz. j and oil the fourth day 120oz. When we mentioned the Extraordinary richness of

this claim two weeks ago, when about 20oz. of gold was obtained per day, it was thought to be next to impossible that deposits of Such a rich character existed in Otago ; but the results then obtained pale into insignificance when placed side bv side with the unprecedented yield of 120oz. of gold per day. It appears that the deposit rims further into Mr Halverson’s claim, and does not pass outside the boundary, as was originally supposed, and on the strength of of which idea a claim adjoiningtheboundary iu a line with the “ gutter ” was pegged off and several shafts sunk. Good payable wash was obtained at the bottom of these shafts, but not of the same rich character. The success of Mr Halverson, we have no doubt will attract many miners to that locality, and will be an incentive to prospectingopertions with the advent of spring.
