THE WEATHER.
Heavy rain set in in Dunedin on Saturlast and continued without intermission until Monday. There has heen no damage of any account in Dunedin, but the damage done on the different railways, and other works is very considerable, and has had the effect unfortunately of stopping the traffic on the various lines,, and it, will take some considerable time, and a large amount of money will have to be expended before the damages are made good. The following we take from the Daily Times of the various casualties : Mosgiel. June 29. Otairo overflowing. Water running over line south of Mosgiel. Slips expected at the Chain’Hills tunnel. There is a break on the line about one one mile south of Waihola. Ballast washed away in several places. At Outran) the line is submerged. At the Round Hill there has been a slip of some eighty yards in length. The Taieri plains have heen inundated to a great depth, and a considerable amount of damage dane. The railway bridge at Outran) will have i- to he carefully examined before tiaffie can he resumed on the branch line. Passengers are being conveyed, between Lawrence and Dunedin, by coach where necessary. There is great injury to the permanent way between Oamarunnd Timaru. from Christchurch the accounts are thit floods have occurred all o'-er the country. The damage cannot be estimated yet, but traffic will bo interrupted in all directions for several days. Sheep and cattle have heen drowned in some places in great numbers. Some of the streets in Christchurch were flooded. At Ashburton all the rivers were flooded, and considerable damage done to the South Trunk Railway. Between two and three miles have been destroyed owing to the large flow of storm water across the plains. The weather has since cleared up and is now’ clear and frosty.
