is le The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council j took place on Thursday evening last, the 4th inst., at the Temporary Chambers. Present, Crs. J Cambridge, Goodwin, Hazlett, Ryan, and Core. ii- The minutes of last meeting. September 21th, 0- also of special meeting, September 22nd, -were [,. read and continued. .\ Amongst other correspondence the Townlrt Clerk read a letter from Mr Bradshaw. M.L.C., ir amongst other thing stated that "The Ken', is the Premier, Mr Stafford, bad consented to u the appointment, of Mr J. D. Feraud to the important office of Justice of the Peace.'' Received. c A letter was road from the Commissioner of 10 Customs, acknowledging receipt of Memorial for m the establishing a Ponded Warehouse at Clyde, ~t stating "That, as there is no power to allow such warehouses except at. Ports, and as it would bo too great an extension of the meaning of the ot term to treat the Town of Ciyde as a port, the be memorial could not bo recommended, nor would j.. it be advisable, until inland communication Lad * been improved, to alter the law to allow of iu--10 land bonding" Received. "meeting, September 21st, the minutes of meet-'"-ing''of September 7th, were produced and read. Proposed by Or. Cope —" That the minutes of meeting of September 7th be confirmed." The explanation given by the Town-Clerk respecting ' the nature, of his agreement being satisfactory. Seconded by Cr. Hazlett. Carried. The minutes of a meeting of Public Works ' Committee were read. Proposed by Cr. Goodwin—"That the minutes ' of the Public Works Committee be and the same are hereby adopted." Seconded by Cr. Ryan, : Carried. Proposed by Cr. Cope—" That as Cr Hazlett is about to proceed to Dunedin, he be requested to wait upon the Government, and urge the payment to this Municipality of the maximum sum of LSOO as the subsidy to be granted to this Council." Carried. The Committee appointed to wait on the Warden, and confer with him respecting the grant of certain blocks *s mi endowment for Municipal purposes, laid their report before .the Council. It was to the eifect that Mr H. W. Robinson, the Warden, would recommend the Government to grant the blocks already applied for by the Council, also the granting of half-an-acre in block XI for a Town-hall Reserve. . __ ( Proposed by Cr. Morice— "That the Town- • Clerk be instructed to write to Mr S. Cannon, | in reply to his letter offering the Dunstan Hotel as a Town-hall, and state that in the absence of ' funds this Council cannot, at present, make auy offer for the purchase of his Building, &c." Seconded by Cr. Goodwin. Carried. Cr. Morice tendered his resignation, he said— Ha did so, not to shirk the responsibilities and labours of office, but that he was about to leave the Province. Proposed by Cr. Cambridge—"That under the circumstances, of the departure from the Province of Cr. Morice, his resignation be, and is, hereby accepted without the infliction of any penalty." Seconded by Cr. Cope. Carried. Proposed by Cr. Haziett—"That the Mayor be and is hereby appointed a member of the ByeLaws Committee, in lieu of Cr. Morice resigned." Seconded by Cr. C! oodwin. Carried. Proposed by Councillor Hazlett—"That in future the Meetings of the Council be held once a fortnight, and that the next meeting be held on Tuesday the 10th iust, also that the resolution passed on the 7th September last, fixing the meetings fortnightly on each alternate Friday be and is hereby rescinded." Seconded by Cr. Cambridge. Carried. The usual vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. A special-meeting of the Council was held at the Temporary Council Chambers, on Wednesday morning last, to consider a telegram from Dunedin, from Councillor Hazlett, respecting the L>")00 subsidy. The Mayor and Councillors Cope, Cambridge, and Goodwin were present. Moved by Councillor Cambridge—•'•'That in as much as tiie five-hundred-pounds subsidy under the authority of the Otago Municipal Corporations Ordinance Amendment Ordinance, 1865, will be paid by the Government on the condition only that such portion of the main-road through Clyde as extends from Longstone street to the northern termination of the municipalboundary shall be maintained by the Corporation. ■This Council hereby agrees to maintain the same as above defined, and that the Town-Clerk forward a telegram to Councillor Hazlett, informing him thereof, and requesting him to see the money paid into the bank of New Zealand as early as possible ; and that the Mayor be cmpowered to give the necessary guarantee to the Government. Seconded by Councillor Cope, and carried. A letter to the Government, guaranteeing to maintain the same, also a telegram to Councillor Hazlett was approved of, and ordered to be farawarded by the Town-Clerk. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the proceedings.
