Ia the House of Commons tbe Pure Beer Bill has been withdrawn, having been blocked in committee. Signor Crispi, ex-Italian Premier, is in a critical state of health. There are persistent reports in New York that the iron strike has ended on a basis of compromise. The Mad Mullah's forces were defeated on the 17th, losing 70. Thirteen British were killed and 21 wounded.
Canada,. Natal, Cape Colony, and Newfoundland have supported the extension of the King's title. Mr Chamberlain suggested that it should not specify any particular colony. Mr Arthur Davies Croydon, shipowner, was killed in the Diberg Alps, by falline: SCO feet. Mr Hay, American Secretary of State, is irritated at Chili not sending a representative to the Pan-American Congress, unless the discussion of her retention of the Peruvian provinces is barred. At the Tuberculosis Congress Herrs Fnchow and Herbner, German scientists, agreed that tuberculosis was not hereditary, but they dissent from the theory that bovine tuberculosis is not transmissible to human beings. The German agrarian party are surprised at the concessions offered by the new tariff, butconsiderthatitisunlikely the bill will pass in its present form. Wool will be admitted free, frozen meat and butter 30 marks per double cwt, packed apples 6 marks, oranges and lemons 12, hard timber 120 pfenniges per cubic metre, soft timber unchanged. Sydney, July 29. Many portions of the country have experienced snow for the first time on record. The Presbyterian Assembly sustained an overture from the New South Wales Assembly, expressing sympathy with the idea of a United Evangelical Christian Church of Australia, and appointed a committee to consider the principles on which the Presbyterian Church were prepared to participate in a larger union, to report to the next Assembly. Perth, July 29. An ex- policeman, formerly stationed in the Kimberley district, has given the Press details of gross cruelties perpetrated by whites on aboriginals, many of whom were flogged on the slightest pretext and otherwise shockingly treated.
