WAIPAWA.
(OWN correspondent.)
The " Waipawa boys," Messra Bone, Burgess, Pctcit, and Klee, arrived by the express yesterday evening, and were met by a great number of the townspeople, the volunteer?, and the Waipawa- brass band. On the arrival of the train they were received by Captain Rathbone and Mr Jas. Williams (chairman of the Town Board), the former calling for three cheers for the troopers Mr Williams then addressed them. He extended to them sx hearty welcome on behalf of the townspeople, after their fifteen months' arduous campaigning, and all were glad to see them safely, baoK. A more fitting reception hart been designed for them but. the elements were against it, and at two o'clock there was such a heavy downpour of rain that all the arrangements had been cancelled. The young ladies of the town had, however, organised a social in their honor for tomorrow evening, when thoy would meet witj> a fitting welcome. Cheers were again given for the returned heroes, and the volunteers and band escorted them to the town. Waipawa is fortunate in having a band whose members are willing to assist on any occasion. When their services are required they always respond with alacrity. The town was gay wi;h bunting, and several houses were brilliantly illuminated, amongst which special mention should be made of Mr C. Whiitington'a hou.-e, which was profusely decorated with Chinese lanterns and presented a g-iy appearance, while Mr Rathbone's store had one window most tastefully decorated with red, white, and blue materials.
I understand that the new church at Onga Onga will be opened on Sunday next. The funds have been generously provider! by Mr H. H. Bridge, who will pla-oe the church at the disposal of the different Protestant denominations.
Mr H. Hill will examine the children of the District School pn August 21st.
I regret to hear that Mr D. S. Fleming, of Flemington, is seriously ill.
