At Hastings.

[own correspondent.]

' Despise the inclemency of the weather there was a good crowd of citizens at the Btation last night to welcome the troopers who have returned from service in South Africa with the Fourth and Fifth Contingents. Trooper Fuszard did not come home withjthem, having gone on to Christchurch. The men were cheered heartily as the train steamed into the station. The Mayor was present to welcome, them on behalf of the town, and the Hastings Rifles, under Captain Fraser, were lined up outside. The Hastings Brass Band played some lively music. The troopers, with the Band and Rifles, then marched to the drillhall, to which the public were admitted.

The Mayor welcomed the returned troopers in a patriotic speech, thanking them in the name of the residents of Hastings for the honor they had done the town and district by their courage and endurance during the South African war.

Trooper Brathwaite responded in a neat and appropriate speech on behalf of himself and his comrades.

After this the band played "Home, Sweet Home," and the troopers then separated to their various homes.
