Mr George E.Eliott,of Dalgefcy and Co., ■who has been for a long time stationed in this district, has been transferred to the company's branch at Gisborne, where he will be in charge. This is an important promotion, and his many friends ab Napier and Hasting? congratulate him upon it, although he will be much missed at Hastings, especially by the Mounted Rifles, of which he is a prominent member. Owing to the principal number of the Returned members of the Fourth and Fifth Contingent not coming back until co-day, the reception announced for yesterday was postponed until this evening. Mr Brathwaite, however, returned last night by the eypieas, and ■ was warmly welcomed by his friends and the public who v/ere at the railway station at the time.
A sharp sho:;k of earthquake was felt here at 8.50 k.st night. It was ouiy slightly felt at Havels/ck. The Abat! oirs Committee of the Borough Council me* yesterday, and after considering tha tenders for a site visited the sites offered. I am informed privately that the choice rests between one near Tomoana (alluded to by the Mayor at the Council meetings) and a Government section at Mahora.
There was a alight sensation about noon to-day. One. of the carts of the Go-operative Butchers' Co. was outside the shop, with the wheels properly locked. A hur.se ran out from Mr Graham's . shooing shop opposite and frightened the horse attached to the butcher's cart. The latter horse bolted, but only had a short iace, the cart capsizing soo;i after 'turning into Ji.arket street. The mcifc wan thrown out, but very little damage waa done to the cart and horae.
A meeting of the Winter Show Committee of Ihe A. and P. Society was held at Williams aril Kettle's office, Hahtii.s, to-day, Mr R. Wellwood presiding. Therj were also present —Mes.-rs W. Bridgman, E. D. Oollison and W. H. Smith. The programme as compiled was adopted and the committee 'allotted the prize money, totalling £200 offered by the society, besides which special prizes have been promised to the value of £30 or £40. The classes include fat stock, cattle, pigs, sheep, cheese, butter, hone) , , bread, scones, poultry, egg?, bams and bacon, fruit and vegetables, agricultural produce, root crop-, chickens, and floral exhibits. There will also be a class for farmer^ , produce grown by exhibitors. Prizes are offered for the best three acres of drilled field turni| s and mangolds. An interesting class is that for the best kitchen and pantry work, all articles shown to be made by the exhibitor or his family. There will also ■be sporting events and a Loyd- Lindsay competition. The programme only requires confirmation by the general committee and will be issued next month. It is proposed to hold the show alx.ul the >end of next April.
