Wkllingto.v, Last night. Dr. McArthur has been appointed to act at Wellington, during the absence from Wellington of Mr Haselden, S.M. The Premier has been unable to say whether the usual grant of ammunition will be made for the annual meeting of the Wellington Rifle Association, which was to have been held on the Ist and 2id January, and cannot announce his decision in the matter until his return from Sydney. The management have therefore been obliged to postpone the meeting indefinitely.
An application has been made to the Government to assist in bringing about a uniform system of municipal bookkeeping. The matter has been referred to the Colonial Secretary, who will confer with the Auditor-General and Secretary of the Ti easury on the subject. Lieutenant ColHds and members of the rifle team to represent the colony at the Federal rifle meeting in New South Wales left for Sydney by the Mokoia this evening. The men have Fraser match rifles which they have tried, and of which they speak in high terms. The team will be absent for about four weeks.
AmoD£ the passengers by the Mokoia were ihe Premier, accompanied by Mrs Seddon and two membeis of his family. The Hon. .James Carroll, Majpr Steward, Messrs J. Stevenson, A. D. Willis, A. L. D. Fraser, and W. J. Napier, M.'sH.R. Judges Edwards and Martin wsre also passengers by the steamer.
It is officially announced that Mr Charles Wilson, editor of the Mad and ex-M.H.R. for Wellington suburbs, has heen appointed librarian of the General Assembly library.
The Cabinet have authorised a further vote of £6000 for the North Lsland Main Trunk Kailway.
Some time ago tenders were called for building a number of railway waggons in the colony. Several tenders were received, but none complied with the conditions. Rapid delivery at a specified price has now been fixed by the Railway Department, at which the delivery of the waggons will be accepted within twelve months. In the meantime the construction of rolling stock will be pushed on by the railway workshops. The Cabinet have decided upon the allocation to be made in respect to the extra moneys voted last session for bringing up to scale the salaries of underpaid teachers. A list of teachers has been compiled, and on various Boards interested agreeing to pay the amount in accordance with the allocation the Minister of Education will foiwaid the necessary funds.
The Government have decided to grant a bonus upon condensed milk manipulated in the colony.
