Arrival of Lady Hopetoun.
New Zealanders Reach Sydney. A Cordial Reception. (Received Dec. 27, 12.23 a.m.) Sydney, Dee. 2G. Lady Hopetoun has arrived Lord
Hopetoun and a crowd of several thousands welcomed her. Owing to the state of her health she was taken in an invalid's chair to a closed carnage, and driven to Government House. Sir Thomas Fitzgerald saw her as she passed through Melbourne by special train. He reports her suffering from neuralgia- and severe prostration, following fever. The South and West Australian Commonwealth contingents, abont 250 officers and men, arrived by special train and marched to camp in Centennial Park. There was glorious weather for the holiday. The chief attractions were the oarnps of Imperial and Indian troops, where a small charge was made for admission, and the landing of the Tntanekai's troops. A big crowd gave them a hearty welcome. The smart, soldierly appearance of the New Zealanders and their striking costumes were much admired. The Tutanekai came to the anchorage amidst the skirling of the pipers, who had a good opportunity of displaying their musicianly skill, consequent upon the subsequent long delay in landing. The Maoris made a decided impression, giving their war cry as they stepped ashore. A special train took the troops to Centennial Park, where they joined their comrades under canvas. A conference of the Postal heads recommended that letters from New Zealand bearing the ,penny stamp should not be accepted until the Commonwealth Government had decided to adopt a similar receipt for a local rate. Every available space for the procession route has been secured. Many of the roofs have been transformed into stands for sightseers, some capable of holding thousands. A fancy price is being asked already. Over 40 smaller stands have been condemned as unsafe. Brisbane, Dec. 26. Lord Lamington, at the request of Ministers, attends the local Commonwealth celebrations, instead of going to Sydney. London, Dec. 26. Lord Wenlock will be the Duke of York's chief of staff during his visit to Australia.
