LATE POLITICAL

THE PREMIER’S Defence scheme. Suggested Committee from Both Houses. {FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY REPORTER.) [by telegraph.] Wellington, This day. The Premier’s scheme for placing the defences of the colony on a new and better footing has excited a good deal of interest among members. There is a feeling, however, that instead of the report being referred to a committee composed only of members of the House it should be a joint committee of both Houses. The Legislative Council has some military experts in its ranks, including Major-General Sir George Whitmore, Colonel Pitt, Major Bonar, Capt. Baillie, and others who could be expected to be of service on such a committee.
