Mr Gladstone, r*~ who has been suffering from a severe neuralgic attack, continues to improve. Messrs Geddes, Butt, and Company have formed the Smithfield markets into a cold storage company with a capital of £50,000, of which £35,000, privately allotted, has been leased for 23 years. The basement of the poultry market at Smithfield is capable of holding 150,000 oarcases of sheep, or the equivalent of beef, fruit, poultry, or eggs. They have secured the land adjoining for the purpose of erecting refrigerating stores. Mr Geddes supervises the business, and the other directors are largely identified with the i Sinithfield markets. The company intends to organise small distributing depots in different parts of the United Ufc Kingdom. ll* In the House of Commons the Hon. Q. N. Curzon, Uuder-Secretary for ' Foreign Affairs, stated that the Powers would endeavor to compel Turkey to evacuate Thessaly a month after the Greek war indemnity loan was issued. The Continental newspapers are discussing- Russia's infringements of international treaties by her action in sending warships belonging to the regular navy through the Dardanelles by night. March 6. The London County Council elections resulted in the return of 68 progressive and 48 moderate candidates, showing a progressive gain of 16, chiefly the outcome of the support of the working classes. On both sides the voting was heavier than at last election. Later. Earl Carrington has been re-elected to his seat on the London County Council. ■ym+* Cairo, March 5. 4 Important archaeological discoveries have been made in the necropolis, at Abydos, Upper Egypt, including the supposed tombs of three kings— Osiris, Set, and Horus. Rome, March 5. There are great rejoicings in Italy in connection with the celebration of the jubilee of the foundation of the constitution. Pretoria, March 5. Dr. Leyds, State Secretary of the Transvaal, speaking in the Volksraad in defence of the foreign Consular grant of £17,500, said it was necessary to secure a good diplomatic service, in proof of the Transvaal's independence, aot suzerainty. "Washington, March 5. Mr Eichard Olney, Secretary of State in President Cleveland's late Ministry, lecturing at tho Harvard College, said the near future would see closer friendship between Brivain and America, and would prove a power of good to all mankind.
