THE KENNEL.
[BY "TUEK V."l
3'ha first day's sport of tho H.B. Plumpton Ooursiog Club, which ie to take place next Saturday, ahould be a great success, judging by the number of looal dogs now in active training.
It is quite evident our Napier sports intend trying to keep some of tho good things hero. Mr W. Glue, the trainer of Clements Tonic and Heres-to IS, last year's champions, is Btiitioxied at Mr J "at Meanoe. He has also anuraborof local dogs in hand, which I think will bo worth watohing, and will make tho running very interesting. On Thursday all the greyhounds taking part in tho meeting will be brought to town, for the purpose of parading the etreeta. This should be a very good idea of advertising their firat meeting. Ihe collie puppy WillenbourneConqueror was recently sold ia England for the large earn of £400. it haa often bof-n said that tho modern atraitt of so called fox terriers ara not game, and ara almost ueeleaa for tho purpose which they were intended for. Ihin, time after time, has been disproved, and their gameness, when properly trained, scarcely needs tho followinar corroboration :—Some ti:no Mr Kodmbnci gave ono of hia show fox terrier bitches, called Damme, to Xiord Alfred Fitaroy, which wiia duly entered with hounds ior thy firafSon hunt 'f.he ot'htr day she was ssnt into a drain sevontyfive yards long, from v/hioh she almost immediately drove a ieush of foxes and still persisted in remaining underground, whore she could be heard hard ut work, and after a considerable tusslo, sha bolted a fourth fox. Ihiis good terrior is but a small one not rnoro thon fifteen pounds in weight. This etatoniont is fully borne out by the pluck and dttormination of eoiho oi our Now Zealand terriers.
The as. Tainui, which arrived (it Wellington last week, brought to Now Zealand one of tbo moat valuable consignments of doRS yet lnndcd in this colony for soma considerable time. Th9y aro the property of Mr ?>2aitl£uid, a Gcotch fancior. They compridi)—Two £oz terriers, two bulldogs, and onu gresir; Duno dog. Tho bulldog w gniii to bo » beautiful littlo chap, a nice fawn iv color, and ia ovidontiy a very typical dog, and good tomporud. Tho bull bitch in on tiw small aide nnil is marked whUo and briudlo. 'J-ha fox torriera ura well bred, being by Vin-a-VL , '. Tho Dano stiicda about thruo fefat high Mr Maitland ahould be complimented on hia pluck iv bringing out such ft valuable oonaifcntaent, especially with the drastic quarantine regulations wo havo at, the pruaant time. They ail arrived ia iirdicltißs condition, and woro duly quarantined for the usual six months. It in to bo hoped that S£r Maitland will be sncoosoful with bin dogß in tho colony, as no doubt he deserves a little encouragement lor hia enterprise.
