Sydney, February 20. The election for the Waveiley seat vacanoy, which waa caused by the death of Mr Angus Cameron, took.place to-day with the following result:—Mr Jiesep (Freetrader), 698 votes; Mr Barlow (Protectionist), 538 ; Sir Henry Parkes, 160.

Kate Henderson has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for marrjing a minor, but sentence was suspended under the First GfEenders Aot.

Sir Henry Parkes says he is better pleased at defeat for the Waverley seat than if he had been elected. He knew what the burden of success entailed, and no defeats or reverses con'd take away what he had done for the country or the claim* he had upon posterity. Those claims would ' live long after hia body waa in the grave. I Sir John Thurston, High Commissioner I of the Western Paoific, sails by the Warri- \ moo for Fiji on the 29th inst. Further heavy rain has fallen at the head of the Brisbane liver, which is rising rapidly, and another flood is feared. At Woodford seven inches of rain has fallen, and the water rose four feet over the bridge. At other places three and four inches have fallen.
