A cable from Mydney last night re the wreok of the Catterthun, read, " The Mararoa, whioh has juat (11.20) arrived, saw nothing even to indicate the disaster had occurred." The U.B.S. Co.'s Mararoa is at present laid up at Dunedin, and it is therefore probable that the steamer mentioned is the Maranoa, belonging to tho A.Lf.S.N. Company.

It is with rogret we have to ohroniole the death of Mr B. O. Hodgson, of the Hastings Post and Telegraph Office. Mr Hodgson joined the Rervice as messenger at Blenheim in 1880, where he was station! d until his health broke down through the heavy work of tho last station. In 1892 ho was transferred to Kaikoura, butowin. to the change not offeotiug any improvement ia his health, he was re- transferred to Hastings iv March last year. His health fur a time waa fairly good, until two months ago, when he fell a victim to that diro disease consumption, with tho abovo result. Mr Hodgson was very highly esteemed by his fellow workers.

To the public generally ho has been a courteous and obligiug officer, and all v/ill be sorry to hoar of his demise To his widow and sorrowing friends is extandud deep sympathy iv their cad beruavomunt.
