Mr Milla moved v resolution the effect being to ask tha Minister to alter the Act bo as to do away with the friotion between Bosrds and committees re the appointment of teachers. A long discussion ensued, the majority of the members , , whildt agreeing that tha present procedure was unaatisfaotory, declining to vote for the motion because they considered it would place too much power in the hands of oommittees. The motion was lost.
Mr Macgregor moved a resolution to the effect that tho Boards should be elected by the electors of the oolony, and that the Minister be asked to amend the Act in that direotion. The motion was lost on the casticg vote of the ohairman.
A motion by Dr Newman in favor of a national system of deoimal notation was agreed to.
On thi) motion of Mr Ddy, it was resolved to ask the Minister to amend the Act to enable Boards to establish central schools for children after pasning the fifth etindard, with a view to give tho ohildren more praotical instruction than is afforded by the present schools The usual compliment to the chair termiuated the labrra of the conference.
