THE CEMETERY.
O.v the tenth of Juno last a meeting of holders of sections in the Napier cemetery was held, for the purpose of selecting gentlemen to be appointed trustees. It was unanimoulsy decided to recommend the Governor—which at present means tho Seddon Government—to appoint Messrs G. 11. Swan, C. H. Edwards, and J. V. Brown. It would bo interesting to know why the appointment of those gentlemen has not been gazetted. It is now close upon two months since the resolution asking for the appointment was passed and sent to Wellington, and it was passed at a meeting convened by public advertisement. Why, therefore, the delay ? Is it that the Government cannot keep partisanship even out of tho graveyard ? Did they feel or were they informed that " wrong color" persons had been selected to keep " God's Aero " in a seemly condition, and have they therefore
resolved not to make tha appointments if they can delay sufficiently long to cause the result of the meeting to be forgotten ? If that is not the reason, it would be interesting to know why in such a simple matter as gazetting three cemetery trustees, chosen by those interested in accordance with the Act, should take over two months to bring about. If as little expedition is shown in other things, is it not fair to ask what the country is taxed for, seeing that the whole theory of taxation involves work done for the public in return for the public's money ? At all events, the present condition of things is not seemly, for it suggests either circumlocution of so determined a kind as to constitute a disgrace to our methods of government, or else petty partisanship so ridiculous as to turn government into a burlesque.
