The remittance man we have twice referred to in those columns died in the hospital last night from pneumonia. Knowing some of the circumstances whioh led to his being taken up to the hospital in a dying stare, we supposed there would have been an iuquest. Upon applying to the police this morning, at about half-past ten o'olook, to know if they wete going to hold an enquiry, we learned that they did not know of the man's death. Upon applying to the nobpital authorities we were lnfocmtd th-.it although Mci-iae, the unfortunate man alluded to, suffering from the effects of drink when admitted, he was also suffering from pneumonia, whioh appeared to be of two or three days' btanding, and that he had died from th-j latter and a certificate to that effect had been givon, thus rendering an inquest unnecessary. MoKae was knocking about the town drunk enough to ba arrested several days last week and the week before, and if he had been locked np possibly he have beeu saved from the exposure whioh brought on the pneumonia.

A meeting of the Hawke's Bay branch of the New Zuulaud Educatioual institute was held at tho Napier tohool this morning, Mr J If. Dodds, M. .., in the chair. The chuf bubinas-s of the meeting was a paper r;-ad by the chairman on ''The School and tha _iome," in which the writer maintained that the school U the helper of the home in the development of the mental faculties of the children ; the teacher takes up tho work of the parent and carries it onwards to a stage beyond what the parent at present oan do. The school is the helper of the home in the matter of dieciptine. The paper, which also dealt with the matter of homa lessons, was a most interesting one, and at the conclusion Mr Dodds was accorded a hearty voti of thanks. Some desultory conversation took place on the composition quetion raised in connection with scholarship pupils, but no definite decision was arrived at.

At the Hastings Magistrate's Court this morning Arthur Stoddart was fined £8 6s, including costs, for failing to account for £2 collected on ace unt of John «siggir, in default a month's impmonmout. Stoddart was further charged and found guilty of stealing a watch and chain, and fined £7 7s, with the alternative of a month's gaol, the sentences to be cumulative.
