SPORTING.

There were a great many visitors on the Hastings track this morning, when a lot of useful work, was done. The .Hug and Aphony were sent round at a steady paoe, and Eip Van Winkle and Prairie Grass were treated to half-paoe work. N6_el went three times round at a good paoe. Blarney, Zanella, and Goosander were treated to slow work. L 3 scar went well over the steepleohase oountry, as did Mr Gollan's other hunter, Dhurringla Tiritea finished at top. Rosciua una Elaine II went strongly three times round, and Tally-ho and Double did similar exercise. Mutiny, Gouranto, and St Anthony were cent the oirouit twioeover the hurdles, the two former jumping splendidly, but St Anthony did not take kindly to the game. Boomerang and Triton did serviceable paoing, while Otaieri and Hopeful went twice over the steepleohase country, both jumping well. T itoae did twice round at a strong pace, and Percador, -with on, did long, useful work. Others were also out, in view of the raoa meetings shortly.

The Dunedin Jockey Club la*t night received 24 nominations for the Dunedin Stakes at the spring meeting, and 32 for the Champagne -takes at tho autumn meeting, 1896.

In the Grand National Hurdle Race, won by .Liberator, the betting was as follows:— 410 Liberator, 65 Warrior, 111 Union Jack, 161 Ebor, 142 Ooala, 126 Fright, 111 Bonovoree, 188 Ida. Fright and Union Jack held the lead for the first mile and a hilf, when Warrior ran up to tha head of the field and entered the straight two lengtas in front o£ Liberator. This pair negotiated the last hurdle on terms, and the finish, ended in the favorite getting home by..a leDgth. Fright was fourth, Bonovoree fifth, Ooala last, ilbor and Ida fell at tha second hurdle. A protest was entered by the owner of Warrior for alleged crossing after jumping the last hurdle. The statements of the riders were heard, and the appeal was dismissed. The rider of Liberator stated th*c he slightly bumped Warrior after tho jump, but he immediately pulled aside 'ihe victory of Liberator was well received, the horse and ridar being loudly cheered aa they oame back to the judge's bus.

In the Great Northern Steeplechase won by Liberator, Fishmonger seoond, and Norton third, the other starters were: Bombardier, Belle, Aorere, Union Jack, Scaltheen, Hero, Deceiver. Liberator and Union Jack alternately led for the first three miles, when the latter fell away and Belle and Fishmonger ran to the front. Belle fell at the post and rails on the hill, and thi issue was left to be determined by Liberator and Fishmonger. The former never gave his opponent a chance, and coming away in the btraight, finished strong, winning easily by three lengths.

The Second Winter Welter at Auckland yesterday was won by Anita, The Sharper saeond, The Lancer third. The other starters were.—Esparto, Bepeater, Boyal, at. Patrick, Samoa, Heart of Oak, Maroro, Stamfoid, Tim, Waiongona, Pororua Won easily. Time lmin 38sec. There were 948 investors, and the dividends ware £31 6j inside and £18 IS3 outside.

The sum of £8304 passed through tha totalizator yesterday at Ellerslie, making a total of £13,734 for the two days of the Grand National meeting.
