The death ia announced of Alexander McCarthy, who was weil known in Parliamentary ciroles a_ special attendant of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He waa aged eighty years.
The Government steamer Stella haa beon leased for twelve mouths, with a purohaaing clauee, by J. A. Fleming, engineer, Auckland. She loaves for Auckland at the beginning of next week. Thomas Johnson, for false pretences', was sentenced to fifteen months. li. Par.ova and M. JKnight pleaded guilty to obtaining money under falsa pretences by meana of the confidence trick, and wore romanded for sentence.
In connection with the Advances to SiUlera Aot, it has been decided that under an occupation license the mortgage need not bo registered by the Registrar, and thsrofore the security will not be recognised by tho superintendent under tho Advanoeß to Settlers Aot.
