The banking returns for the Australian oolonies show the position to be much strengthened sinco 1593, when there was £14 proprietary capital per £100, as compared with £22 per £100 now. The net earnings shown by the list t«vo half-yearly dividend payments by tho banks not reconstructed deoreased as compared with 1893 by £163,000, and tho reconstructed banks by £281,000. Approximately, the dividends paid on the unreoonstruoted banks' jratid up capital were reduced from 10 9 por cent to 5 7 per cont, and in the case of the reconstructed banks from 10 9 per cent to 2*o per cent.
