VESSELS IN PORT
Southern Cross, ship Venus, ketch
The s.s. Southern Cross lauded her cargo into the Harbor Board's shed yesterday afternoon, and steamed from the wharf at 5 o'clock for Wellington. She is expected to be back here on Friday, and leaves for northern ports at 4 p.m. The ketch Verms returned to port laat night, and sailed up to the breastwork. Captain Wiig reports having mot with strong head wind aud heavy sea, agaias-t which no hendway could bo irado, and in no chance of tho weather moderating , in the near future appeared likely, it was thought advidable to return. The s.s. Wel;a went over to Mr Northe's Slip yesterday, and will he taken up this afternoou, She is to undergo her periodical overhaul, and be cleaned and painted. The barque Glenlora, Captain Tonkin, a cousin of Capt. Tonkin, of local fame, will sail on Satnrday from Timaru for London. The s a Fanny is still delayed in port waiting for the weather to moderate, when she will steani for coast stations. The s.s. Orawaiti is expected to arrive here ftt the end of the week from Westport, with a part cargo of co&ls. She ia to discharge part of her cargo at Gisborne before coming hero. Tho s.s. Australia leaves Auckland tomorrow, and is not expected to arrive here before Sunday, bhe will be despatched for Wellington on Mouday, at 11 a.m , from the wharf. Both the Union Company's big steamers will be here on Saturday next. The ss. Waihora -will arrive from southern ports, and the e.s. Tarevcera is expected from the north. Tho Hauroto left Sydney for Wellington yesterday. The K.MS. Tongariro left Cape Town on Sunday last for Fort Chalmers, Lyttolton, and Wellington. The eteamer lonic, which put into Cape Town with a broken shaft in "February last, arrived at Hobart yesterday afternoon, and was to sail again for New Zealand this morning. She has no paasEogers.
