Wellington, This day. The value of the native reserves in the South Mand is assessed at £531,231. The whole of tho capital of the New Zealand Candle Company was over subscribed. Work will be started at once. The plant is now on the way to the colony. The chairman of tho Benevolent Bociety characterises the Government subsidy system as iniquitous, beoauso it tends to freeze up the sources of charity ; still, so long as it was law, he explained that the society intended to demand the subsidy.
