[-KE PBKSS ASSOCIATION. [ Appeal Court fiev. Mr Isitt's Mission. The Premier's Operation. Wellington, Thi. day. The case of Regina v. Gr.eu came before tbe Appeal Court to-day. The point argued was ouo of law reserved by the District J udgo sitting at fc'ow Plymouth for consideration of tho Supreme Court, and reserved by Mr Justice Oonolly for determination by the Court of Appeal. Accused was couvicted of assault on a Mrs Kuowles. At the trial Mrs Knowles gave evidence of the -S.ault, and that at the time of the assault accused charged her (Mra Kuowles) with couimittiug adultery with accused's huabaud. Mra Kuowles, on cross examiua-

tiou, was asked whether she had not committed adultery with accused's husband, aud denied it. Counsel for a.cused then proposed to call evidence to prove adultery, but tha District Judge refused to admit it. The question for the Court of Appeal was whether the evider.ee waa admissible, and the Court (Judges Richmond, Donniaton, and Conolly) held unanimoualy that it was properly rejected, and reaffirmed the convicti n.

Tho principal iv tho supposed " long firm" is stated to be V. illiam Thompson, who is not known to the police, and so far has not Deen arrested. Of the others tho notorious J. W. Crabtree was arrested on a charge of acting as an agont at F.atliei.ton, and Q. W. Goode was also arrested. The latter is a native of

Tiiamauia. Many firms aro said to have bo .n victimised, some for amounts approaching a hundred pounds. The last stage of the operation on the Premier was completed thia morning, with apparent success. Cranoa are to bo procured from Westport for work ou the Wow Plymouth breakwater. A number of prisoners havo alroady beon sent there.
